Students had ample time to prepare for their speaking tests using the method used Thu March 3 (below)
Speaking Assessment 2 – Week 10 of term (15%)
View a video segment and make a recording in this way
Follow this method explained here
Please understand the method of speaking exam preparation in Vance.docx
1. Watch a video from this list
http://efan101.pbworks.com/w/page/87785011/Videoclips_for_N101_Final_Speaking
2. USE the worksheet I gave you and which many of you filled out
http://vancesclass.pbworks.com/w/file/105680658/Week10videopractice.docx
3. Make a recording of your answers to the questions you wrote on the worksheet
4. Email the recording to vstevens@hct.ac.ae or airdrop it to me during class
AND return the worksheet you worked from
When I get BOTH the recording AND the worksheet
I will provide feedback on the recording written on the worksheet
What happened in this class?
The teacher set the assignment as shown above.
It was displayed on the board and available to the students on their iPads
The teacher modeled what he wanted the students to do
Despite thorough preparation and clear instructions, no students produced any audio during this class
Follow this cycle: Please understand the method of speaking exam preparation in Vance.docx
Please understand the method of speaking exam preparation in Vance’s Classes
First we introduce the ICAO exam context via PIE (Practice ICAO Exams) site, VIDEO descriptions
http://www.practiceicaoenglish.com/demo/index.html (find this link at Bb Mobile Learn)
Next we provide a CHECKLIST of points you might cover on your speaking final exam
http://vancesclass.pbworks.com/w/file/105680658/Week10videopractice.docx
(This and other links available at http://VancesClass.pbworks.com)
Third, we MODEL what you need to do on the speaking test
You can find sample videos here
http://efan101.pbworks.com/w/page/87785011/Videoclips_for_N101_Final_Speaking
We have three steps for modeling. For each of the videos
(1) We have a Hot Potatoes exercise that each student can complete online
(2) We have worksheets made from these exercises
(3) Students can fill out the written checklist for each of these models
Finally, students can record themselves using the worksheet in step (3) above
Your teacher will correct your worksheet and return it to you.
(1) Make your first two recordings using the completed worksheet
(2) After that try making recordings without using the worksheet
Vance will record in his gradebook each time you have
(1) Completed a Hot Potatoes cloze exercise
(2) Completed a worksheet
(3) Emailed your recording to vstevens@hct.ac.ae
This method is meant to help students improve in their speaking performance. Because teacher time is limited and in order to work efficiently, Vance accepts recordings only from students who have followed the prescribed approach designed to help them improve. These steps must be followed so that available time can be spent on students who are working systematically to improve their performance.
