Week 25

WEEK 25 – SPEAKING PROGRESS TEST (15%)
- Pilot / ATC scripted reports where students recreate scripted pilot & ATC reporting with examiner
- General ICAO picture description component
Ratings focus on:
- Pronunciation (pronunciation, stress, rhythm, intonation)
- Structure (appropriate usage of grammatical structures and sentence patterns)
- Vocabulary (use of aviation vocabulary to communicate effectively on work-related topics)
- Fluency (tempo, over/under/use of discourse markers, fillers).
- Comprehension (ability to comprehend accurately work-related topics, as well as a range of speech varieties)
- Interactions (response time, dealing with misunderstanding)
- Ability to use ICAO alphabet and numbers accurately
- Ability to handle clarification requests.
Week 24
Tuesday and Wednesday Final Exam – 30%
The FINAL assessment consists of
- Vocabulary – Words from Oxford English for Aviation (Units 1 – 3)
- Listening comprehension – Pilot and ATC recordings / ATIS recording(s)
- Reading Comprehension – Passage with aviation theme
- Writing – IELTS Task 1 – Letter of Advice – topic with aviation theme
Sunday June 12
Per 5 very last opportunity to work on Memrise for final independent learning mark
Every week until your final exam week 24, you earn an Independent Study mark for Vocabulary practice in MEMRISE
You should have 5000 points by Sunday June 12.
This will be the last of 8 marks to make up your independent learning score (10%)
- This is to review for the Final Exam scheduled in Week 24
- You can reset your progress in Memrise and review all the vocabulary from units 1-3
In class this period the teacher showed the students their average marks and how they would appear if they worked on Memrise this period or didn't. Most students relaxed during the period (last of the day during Ramadhan) but the following students took advantage of the opportunity to improve their independent learning scores:
- Obeid, met Week 23 target, for a 100% overall Independent Learning score
- Majid, met Week 23 target, for a 100% overall Independent Learning score
- Saif, met Week 23 target, for an 87% overall Independent Learning score
- Mohammed Said, 20% of Week 3 target, 40% overall IL score
- Rashed Ali, 17% of Week 3 target, 77% overall IL score

We will try to do today what was assigned yesterday. The teacher will again return your papers for you to COMPLETE

Dear Sir / Madam,
My name is Xxx Yyy and I am one of your pilots. I became a member of your team in 2004. I fly all over the world and last week, you sent me to Madeira, which is an island in Portugal. But, there were several problems while I was landing.
First, the runway at the Madeira Airport is very short. It is very dangerous because it is close to the sea and the mountains. It is very difficult to land there. Secondly, there are many goats on the island and they sometimes run onto the runway. Finally, the ATCs speak very bad English. You cannot understand them at all.
I think it will be a very good idea if Etihad Airways stops its flights to Madeira immediately. I also think you should write a letter to the Portuguese authorities and tell them to make their airport better.

Writing handed back, and the students were told to do the following work on their papers. Teacher consulted with students individually about their grades during the class. At end of the class the teacher collected the papers. Not one student had written anything on his paper. So we'll try again on Monday, without teacher being distracted with having to orally convey to students individually their marks.
