Per 5 - I read what the students wrote in response to the prompt on Tuesday into Google Docs and produced exercises where I returned to them their own words with linking opportunities gapped, and many of the students completed these with connectors chosen from a list at the top of the page. Many also wrote more as suggested. I corrected these and gave them to Nery to be returned to the students on Sunday March 12

Periods 4 and 5 - Listen In Unit 5 Your Turn (to write)

 

Page 31 in your textbook, ENGL N125 English Communications

Listen to and read Asking and Talking about a Trip

Then Try This: Listen In Unit 5 Your Turn to write.docx

 

Write about an exciting trip that you took last weekend, 
last summer, or when you were a child

 

Describe where you went and what each place was like.

 

In your report, answer questions like on p.31 of Listen In:

 

  • Where did you go?
  • How long did you go for?
  • What did you visit?
  • What did you do there?
  • What was the most exciting thing you did?

 

Use as much vocabulary from Listen In Unit 5 pages 29-31 as possible.

Where possible, try to combine simple sentences to make complex sentences using relative pronouns (that, which, who) – Band 5 level writing. 

  

Link main points with

  • simple connectors "and", "but", "because" – Band 3 level writing
  • sequential linking words "first", "then", "before/after" – Band 3.5 level writing
  • a wider range of cohesive devices, such as "in fact", "on the other hand", "due to" – Band 5 level writing

 

Try to organize in paragraphs – Band 4 level writing

There was a discussion of class protocol between my students and visitors to my class

The majority of students had failed the writing portion of the final exam.

I tried to show the students how they could improve that by using what they have learned about relative pronouns to include at least one complex sentence in their compositions. 

 

I attempted to show them of these documents (the projector failed incessantly, causing disruption to the presentation)

 

One student completed the work, and in the version of the assignment above, I included her work as a sample 

 

Later I produced a video to explain in 10 min what I was trying to do

To date, our team in Sri Lanka has built four hospitals, providing treatment to almost half a million people.

 

5 - Treating malnutrition in Kenya

During this year, we have trained 500 local people to treat malnutrition in their villages.

 

6 - Forced closure of mobile clinics in Ethiopia

We have closed our healthcare programme in Ethiopia because of a lack of funding.
