Lesson 20 Period 7, Ian helped the students prepare their Keynote presentations
Two ladies were working on their shared Keynote, but the others had made little progress,
so I printed the transcripts of the lectures they had chosen and prepared outlines on the transcripts.
I gave these out and asked the ladies to make Keynote slides from the outlines.
I told them to be ready to present on Tuesday.
This was the plan, but the ladies had not prepared complete, or in some cases, any outlines from the day before,
So I went over the TED Talk presentations with them to make sure they understood them and tried to highlight main ideas from the transcripts. I gave out copies of the transcripts so the students could see in writing what they had been listening to.
Use this rubric to evaluate your presentation: Presentation Rubric HCT simple.pdf
Some students took notes; others had produced no notes by the end of this period

The students had varying success in taking notes.
Some were unable to find a video they could understand and use by the end of this period,

Let's look at a systematic way of learning how to do things in Minecraft.
Keep a Google search open on your iPad.
Use entries like this one "how can i make a XXX in minecraft"
(Start the search with how can I make and then just change the XXX to what you want to make)
For example, Sara and Fatima need to get light so they can show us their house and garden at night.
How can they make torches?
First they need to PUNCH some TREES. From this they can get blocks of wood.
Then they need STICKS and PLANKS so they can make a PICKAXE and get COBBLESTONE.
The first two can be done on a 2x2 crafting table. You'll see one of these when you press the E key.
How can I make a STICK in Minecraft
How can I make a PLANK in Minecraft
For anything else you'll need to make a 3x3 crafting table.
How can I make a CRAFTING TABLE in Minecraft
Pull the crafting table into your quick toolbar below your 'pockets' and put it in your hand.
(Use the mouse-wheel to select it or type the number from left of where it is)
Once it's in your hand, put the cross-hairs where you want to place it and right click to drop it there.
Now RIGHT click on it to open its 3x3 grid
Now you can make a pickaxe from planks and sticks
How can I make a PICKAXE in Minecraft
If you think you'll need to defend yourself you can make a wooden sword at this point
How can I make a SWORD in Minecraft
Put the pickaxe in your hand and either dig into a mountainside or down into the earth.
Place the cross-hairs where you want to dig and hold down the left mouse button.
You'll collect a lot of dirt and cobblestone.
When you have 8 cobblestone blocks you can build a furnace
How can I make a STOVE in Minecraft
Now you can put wood in the furnace to make charcoal.
Put the stove in your hand and place it on the ground (position the cross-hairs and right click to drop)
Right click on the stove to use it
How can I make CHARCOAL in Minecraft
Read the instructions
Put fuel on the bottom (e.g. lava buckets, charcoal, coal, logs) and one regular log on the top of the furnace.
Logs are the blocks of wood you get when you punch trees.
Once you have charcoal, you can make torches
How can I make a TORCH in Minecraft
Now you can place lights at night. Just put a torch in your hand and right click where you want to put it.
To remove it, put the cross-hairs on it and hold down the left mouse button.
When it falls on the ground, walk over it and it will jump into your inventory.
Also, you'll find that your wooden sword and pickaxe won't last very long.
You can replace the wood planks with cobblestone blocks to make STONE swords and pickaxes.
Later, when you find COAL you can use that instead of charcoal.
When you find IRON you can put that in your furnace and make IRON INGOTS
Then you can use these to make iron swords and iron pickaxes for even greater strength.
If you want to make other things just use the Google search formula above to learn how.
At the end of period 6 we looked at a tutorial that explains what you may have missed in the Tutorial World

Each student tells the class one by one
Now work with a partner.
Your partner is the interviewer. You are being interviewed.
Tell your partner the same thing.
The partner writes your information on a sheet of paper (scan and upload worksheet when possible)
